Average item level (sometimes called by acronym, AIL) is a numerical value introduced with Wrath of the Lich King and added to the Stats panel of the character window with the release of Cataclysm. It represents the average of the item levels of the highest equippable items for all equipment slots. Strangely it includes items not currently equipped, but also items in the character's backpack, bags, or bank.
