He played junior hockey for the Windsor Spitfires and the Niagara Falls Flyers from 1975 to 1977. In 1977 he turned pro with the Phoenix Roadrunners (CHL) and the Hampton Gulls. The next season Dwyer earned his first NHL callup with the Rockies, scoring 2 goals and 3 assists in 12 games. He played another 10 games for the Rockies the following season. In 1980 he signed as a free agent with the Calgary Flames but only got into 9 games over 2 seasons for the NHL team. He retired in 1983.
