  • Dr John Allan Gillison (22 June 1892 - 15 August 1975) was a physician and local politician active in the Rotherhithe area. Born in Melbourne, Australia, he was the son of a Scottish minister. He spent most of his childhood and youth in New Zealand before moving to Scotland to study medicine at the University of Edinburgh and graduating in 1920. In the early 1920s he moved to Bermondsey where he joined the practice of Dr Alfred Salter. Salter was a committed member of the Labour Party and became the first Labour member of parliament for Bermondsey. Gillison joined the Socialist Health Association and remained a member of the practice for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Panel Committee for the County of London. The panel committee was elected by general practitioners who operated free services for workers who made sufficient National Insurance contributions. He was first elected to the London County Council in 1934 as a Labour Party councillor elected representing Bermondsey, Rotherhithe. He was re-elected in 1937 and 1946. When the electoral boundaries were changed in 1949 he was elected for the new Bermondsey electoral division. Gillison became disillusioned with Labour Party policy, and in July 1951 announced he was leaving the party, accusing it of "invoking class envy to catch votes". He resigned from the council on 14 December 1951 and his seat remained vacant until the next council elections in 1952. In January 1952 it was announced that Gillison had joined the Bermondsey Conservative Association. He retired to Jersey where he died, aged 83.
