The 5th Cosseria Infantry Division was mobilized in October 1939 and took part in the invasion of France. It was sent to the Eastern front in July 1942 and suffered heavy losses in the winter of 1942-43. It was reforming in Italy when Rome surrendered to the Allies in September 1943. On 23 June 1940, the Cosseria Division captured Menton, on the French-Italian border, in house-to-house combat.
