It is located on the Lizard Peninsula south of the town of Helston, and Tredannick Wartha, a villa belonging to the Tregennis family, is located some distance from it inland. The town's vicar is Mr Roundhay. Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson rented a cottage on the coast near the village as a vacation house so the former could convalesce: however, a remarkable crime that occurred shortly after their arrival, leading to the case Watson recounts in The Adventure of the Devil's Foot.
