  • It was a regimental special troops (RST) element attached to the Republic Special Operations Brigade, exclusively participating in special task operations and providing classified activities for the Special Operations Brigade. Special Task Reconnaissance detachment was originally detailed exclusively to provide specialized intelligence for the Special Forces Regiment, operating through deep reconnaissance (DR) and special reconnaissance (SR) to provide military intelligence (MI), geographical intelligence, signals intelligence (SIGINT), and technical intelligence in support of the theater Republic objective and to support local Republic special forces, and its operators were trained in orbital insertion, airborne insertion (HALO/HAHO), maritime and littoral insertion, and heliborne insertion. Six months into the Clone Wars, in 22 BBY, the STR detachment was significantly reorganized, despite sustaining extremely few casualties resulting from its dedicated reconnaissance role. Already after six months and mounting casualties, it was decided that a dedicated reconnaissance team performing services for all of the Republic Special Operations Command (RSOC) was redundant and unnecessary; most Republic special operations forces (SOF) had already developed small dedicated reconnaissance elements, and although the Commander, Surface Task Reconnaissance (CMDRSURTASKRECON) was invariably well-placed with the Theater Commander and the Theater Special Forces Coordinator, most theaters and their attached special forces (SF)-capable units had no need for additional reconnaissance assets placed through the Surface Task Reconnaissance group. Thereafter, while the STR detachment was primarily oriented towards special reconnaissance (SR), it was also redesignated with having a secondary assault function and a search-and-rescue (SAR) function. STR operators were no longer specialized reconnaissance operators; they would undergo specialization in direct action (DA) to give the platoon a reconnaissance-in-force (RIF) capability, and would undertake roles in counterterrorism (CT), counterinsurgency (CI), counterproliferation (CP) of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), foreign internal defense (FID), civil-military operations (CMO), in extremis hostage rescue, air assault, etc... portraying the unit as an advanced special operations (ASO) unit.
