- Chakotay, die van afkomst een indiaan is, is opgegroeid op een planeet dichtbij de Cardassian ruimte. Waar hij in 2350 van gevlucht is door de steeds meer dreigende situatie. Sindsdien is hij naar Starfleet academie gegaan. Door zijn gewelddadige omgeving heeft hij erg veel problemen gehad met de wet en de regels te handhaven.
