- The verb jump is commonly used to describe the process of travelling via FTL drive. Dialogue states that the drive itself is "spooled up" prior to use. The term FTL is commonly used in the original Battlestar Galactica film and television series. The term FTL is also commonly used when the show is being discussed by outside parties.
- Theoretically, a ship travelling at this velocity could traverse the Milky Way galaxy in roughly 200 years. In practice, typical UESA vessels have to refuel every few hundred Lightyears. FTL travel in "busy" areas is coordinated by relay beacons that define dedicated FTL corrdiors reminiscent of airplane flight corridors. In uncharted, open space they are able navigate on their own.

In general, the larger the drive, the longer the ship can run at FTL. When travelling across space, thrusters are applied in one direction for the first half of the trip, then the thrusters are reversed for the second half of the trip in order to reach appropriate speeds for arriving. In 2185, Commander Shepard can have a conversation with Marab on this particular point stating that several people who travel in space forget that the ship must be slowed as much as it was accelerated, hence it will start being slowed halfway to its destination.
