Toad is a recurring character who appears in not only the Paper Mario series, but as well as the mainstream Super Mario Bros. series of the Mario series (a trait shared with Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Bowser). While he appears most identical to most Toads in terms of his appearance, Toad is actually an entirely different and unique character by his own means. He constantly plays the role of Princess Peach's loyal servant or her Mushroom Retainer. His roles in the Mario RPG and Paper Mario games are often minor; however, he is still often seen to being rather courageous as he tries to assist the Mario Bros. to the very best of his ability.

  • Toad, also known as Kinopio in Japan, is a fictional humanoid mushroom that is both a single character and the collective name of the "Mushroom People" found in the Mushroom Kingdom. The Toad species first appeared in Super Mario Bros. as seven guards that serve Princess Peach, called Mushroom Retainers. In games prior to Paper Mario, which features an entire race of Toad inhabiting Toad Town, the capital of the Mushroom Kingdom, manuals referred to them as Mushroom People, but they were always referred to as Kinopio in Japanese languages.

  • Toad (キノピオ, Kinopio) is a humanoid mushroom-like character who usually serves as a major ally for Mario and Luigi. As an individual character, Toad made his debut in Super Mario Bros. as one of the several Mushroom Retainers (Toads who protect Peach the most), then Super Mario Bros. 2, where he was a playable character (the fastest and strongest one however he had the weakest jump) on equal standing to the other protagonists — Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach.
