Venus Williams is one of four women in the open era to have won five or more Wimbledon singles titles. Between the 2000 Wimbledon Championships to the 2001 US Open, Williams won four of the six Grand Slam singles tournaments held. She is one of only five women in the open era to win 200 or more main draw Grand Slam singles matches. Williams has won four Olympic gold medals, one in singles and three in women's doubles.[6] She and her sister Serena have won more Olympic gold medals than any other tennis player, male or female. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Williams became only the second player to win Olympic gold medals in both singles and doubles at the same Olympic Games, after Helen Wills Moody in 1924. With 49 singles titles, Williams is behind only her sister Serena among active players on the WTA Tour. Her 35-match winning streak from the 2000 Wimbledon Championships to the 2000 Generali Ladies Linz tournament final is the longest since January 1, 2000. She is also one of only three active WTA players to have made the finals of all four Grand Slams, the other players being her sister and Russian Maria Sharapova.[7] Venus Williams has played against her sister in 27 professional matches since 1998, and won 11. They have played against each other in eight Grand Slam singles finals, with Serena winning six times. Beginning with the 2002 French Open, they opposed each other in four consecutive Grand Slam singles finals, the first time in the Open Era. On the other side, the pair have won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles playing alongside each other and are undefeated in Grand Slam finals. The Williams sisters also took part in the Battle of the Sexes tennis edition, in one of the few instances, where female tennis players played against ranked male tennis players.[8][9][10] Contents [hide] 1 Early life 2 Playing style 3 Professional career 3.1 1994–96: Professional debut 3.2 1997–99: Early success 3.2.1 1997: Debut Grand Slam final 3.2.2 1998: 1st WTA title & entering the top 10 3.2.3 1999: 3 Tier I titles & continued success 3.3 2000–02: Williams sisters domination 3.3.1 2000: Olympic gold medals & Wimbledon and US Open champion 3.3.2 2001: Achieving back-to-back Wimbledon & US Open titles 3.3.3 2002: World no. 1 ranking & 4 consecutive Grand Slam finals 3.4 2003–06: Injuries and losses 3.4.1 2003: Australian Open final & injuries 3.4.2 2004: Tough losses & further injuries 3.4.3 2005: 3rd Wimbledon title 3.4.4 2006: Wrist injury & drop in the rankings 3.5 2007–10: Return to form and world number 2 ranking 3.5.1 2007: 4th Wimbledon title 3.5.2 2008: 5th Wimbledon title & Olympic gold in doubles 3.5.3 2009: 8th Wimbledon final 3.5.4 2010: Return to world no. 2 3.6 2011–13: Injuries and illness 3.6.1 2011: Sjögrens Syndrome diagnosis 3.6.2 2012: Comeback & Olympic record 3.6.3 2013: Back injury 3.7 2014–present: Resurgence and return to the top 10 3.7.1 2014: Ending title drought 3.7.2 2015: Improvement at the Grand Slams & re-entering the top 10 3.7.3 2016: 49th career title, Wimbledon semifinals, highest ranking since 2011 and Olympics mixed doubles silver medal 4 Fight for equal prize money 5 Other on court activities 5.1 1998: Karsten Braasch vs. the Williams sisters 6 Personal life 6.1 Entrepreneur 7 Recognition 8 Equipment 9 Career statistics 9.1 Grand Slam performance timeline 9.2 Grand Slam finals 9.2.1 Singles: 14 (7 titles, 7 runners-up) 9.2.2 Women's doubles: 14 (14 titles) 9.2.3 Mixed doubles: 3 (2 titles, 1 runner-up) 10 Records and achievements 11 Awards 12 See also 13 References 14 External links
