Norman Bates is the main protagonist and antagonist of Alfred Hitchcock's film Psycho and its remake. He is also the protagonist of Bates Motel, the TV series based on Psycho. Norman is one of the best-known fictional serial killers, beside Michael Myers, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Chucky. The creation of Norman was inspired by Ed Gein, a real-life serial killer who was also the inspiration of Leatherface. In the original 1960 film and its sequels, Norman is played by Anthony Perkins. He is played by Vince Vaughan in the 1998 remake. In Bates Motel, he is played by Freddie Highmore.
