Schmeer began his career on stage, performing in Hamburg theaters, and since 1993 has acted every season at Theater Lüneburg. On television, he was a regular on the family/police drama Da kommt Kalle, as father Stefan Andresen (2007-2011) and on Hallo Robbie, about a sea lion, as policeman Grausch (2001-2006). He has made appearances on Tatort, Bella Block, and Der Landarzt. As a voice actor, he dubbed parts in McLeod's Daughters, Dance Academy, and the cartoon Sherlock Yak.
