Jefferson simply adopted several Federalist ideals and soon the Republicans (Jefferson's party) became more like the Federalists. Additionally their leader Alexander Hamilton was shot and killed in July 1804 by Aaron Burr which didn't help their longevity much either.The federalists lost power because there wasn't enough land for farms, and more and more people started believing in a national government.
