The United States of America was a North American Republic, officially founded in 1776, gained its independence from Britain in 1783 after a lengthy revolutionary war. However, various regional issues within the country, most important of which was chattel slavery, led to a brief civil war which saw the pro-slavery southern states form a new republic, the Confederate States of America, and secede from the U.S.
