In 2273, he reported to the disturbance in Lieutenant Ilia's quarters, when the probe in her form (sent by V'Ger) arrived. He echoed its use of the term "carbon units". To which Doctor Leonard McCoy answered, "Humans, Ensign Perez. Us." (TOS novelization: Star Trek: The Motion Picture) In 2278, Perez was serving aboard the USS Bozeman when it was lost in the Typhon Expanse for 89 years, eight months and 23 days.
