Lookout Mountain was the site of brief skirmish during the climax of the Second Great War. In 1943, the Confederate States Army stationed artillery units on the mountain to resist the United States Army's advance on Chattanooga. However, these positions were neutralized by US paratroopers, and the mountain was captured by US forces, who used it to bombard the interior of Georgia.
