  • The 1957 Old Dominion 500 was a Grand National (now Nextel Cup) event held at Martinsville Speedway on October 6, 1957. Bob Welborn dominated the race, leading 435 of the 500 laps, but many of those were not really led by Welborn. Welborn, feeling ill, handed over control of the car to Possum Jones midway through the race. So, it was Jones holding off Jimmy Massey by fourteen seconds for what was going to be Welborn's first victory though Jones never himself won a race. However, complicating the fiasco was Welborn's car. NASCAR never officially recognized the win because Welborn had illegally driven a convertible.
