The studio grew to about 30 artists, with Ken Bald as the art director. Ward's first credited works are writing and drawing an episode each of the two-page humor features Private Ward in Fawcett's Spy Smasher #2 (Winter 1941) and Bulletman #3 (January 14, 1942), published closely with each other. Shortly thereafter, Quality Comics editor George Brenner hired Ward to write and pencil the hit aviator feature Blackhawk of World War II. Ward artwork for Military Comics #30-31 (July–August 1944), with the next several issues generally but unconfirmably credited to Al Bryant.

Starting 18th in the boycott field, Ward completed most of the laps and wound up with a solid 11th place finish, a run that would prove to be his career best. Ward stepped it up to a two-race schedule when he returned to the sport in 1971, finishing a career-high 72nd place in points. Both of his races came in the Talladega events, recording a 29th in the spring race due to an engine failure but following that up with a solid 17th place showing in the summer show. Ward's next start, which came in 1972, came yet again at Talladega. This time, though, Ward severely struggled. Starting last (50th) in the field, Ward only made it to 49th by day's end due to an oil leak just ten laps into the race. Ward tried both Talladega events during the 1973 season with a new team to find mixed results. He didn't fare well yet again in the spring event, lasting just nine laps before a massive crash took him out of the race and into 51st finishing position. He did significantly improve in the July race, completing all but nine laps in route to an 18th place showing. Ward's final career race came in 1975, when the driver made his final laps around Talladega. Driving for his own team, Ward started 43rd but was headed to a solid finish until a clutch issue bit him late and left him 28th in the final rundown.

Ward's drug and alcohol use increased throughout Black Sabbath's heyday. By the late '70s Ward was drinking during gigs, something he had never done before.[4] He also began experiencing panic attacks.[4] Ward has said he cannot remember the 1980 recording Heaven and Hell due to his alcohol abuse.[7] According to Black Sabbath bandmate Iommi, Ward disappeared on 21 August 1980, without saying goodbye, other than a telephone call to then-Black Sabbath vocalist Ronnie James Dio informing him "I'm off then, Ron."[8] He then briefly played in a band called Max Havoc.[5] He sat out one album (1981's Mob Rules) before returning to Black Sabbath for 1983's Born Again album. He once again left the band for health reasons prior to touring in support of Born Again. He again rejoined Black Sabbath in the mid-1980s, though the band did not record or tour during this period.
