He also competed at the 1940 International Week of Winter Sports. At the club level, Hertl played for I. CLTK Praha and LTC Praha. He later became a coach and taught goalie clinics. At the age of 50, the long-retired Hertl returned to play in goal for two matches against the United States and HC Dynamo Moscow at the 1967 Pre-Olympic Tournament.
