  • Meningitis is inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. The inflammation may be caused by infection with viruses, bacteria, or other microorganisms. Dr. Nicholas Rush mentioned this affliction when presented with the symptoms by Lt. Tamara Johansen. (SGU: "Time")
  • Meningitis is an inflammation of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) surrounding the brain. It is susually caused by bacteria, viruses. Common symptoms are reduced neurological function and classically a stiff neck. Meningitis caused by bacteria can be prevented by vaccination such as pneumococcal and meningococcal vaccines.
  • Meningitis was a potentially fatal disease. In an alternative timeline accidentally created by the Fifth Doctor, the RMS Lusitania did not sink on 7 May 1915 and a petty criminal named Eric Charles Vincent (who died in the sinking of the Lusitania in the proper timeline) killed Alexander Fleming in a botched robbery attempt in December 1927 before the biologist discovered penicillin. Without the protection offered by penicillin, Earth fell prey to new strains of meningitis and pneumonia in 1956 and the survivors never developed a space programme. Consequently, the Knights of Velyshaa were not defeated by the Earth Alliance in 3562 as they otherwise would have been. (AUDIO: The Sirens of Time)
  • Meningitis is a pathological condition resulting from any of a wide population of viruses, parasites or bacteria (pathogens). Pathogens in the space between the arachnoid and pia layers of the meninges (the sheathing that coats nerves) cause the breaking of subarachnoid blood vessels, therefore swelling the subarachnoid space and applying pressure on the underlying cortical brain tissue, resulting in lack of oxygen to and compression of neurons. This leads to the loss of function of the pressured neurons. Continual pressure can lead to permanent loss of function.

(AUDIO: The Sirens of Time) In Peri Brown's Kyropite-induced dream on YT45, her son Kyle was diagnosed with meningitis. (AUDIO: The Mind's Eye)
Bacterial meningitis is very contagious, highly virulent, and acts quickly. Patients who are exposed to the disease can die from the disorder in a matter of hours if they are untreated. In Kids, House is helping the hospital dealing with an outbreak of meningitis when he finds a patient with similar symptoms that are not meningitis. In Airborne, the patient appears to have symptoms that suggest bacterial meningitis. Cuddy wants to land the plane so they can all get treatment, but House does not believe the disease is meningitis. However, several other passengers, including Cuddy, develop the same symptoms after the plane has passed its point of no return. Luckily, it merely turns out to be mass hysteria and the symptoms of everyone except the original patient disappear when they are reassured by House that there is nothing wrong with them.
