Following the Guardians, Drax assisted in killing the Abilisk for the Sovereign people, only for Rocket Raccoon to betray them. Drax followed the Guardians as they encountered Ego, the long lost father of Star-Lord, developing a close bond to Mantis, who soon revealed that Ego's truth plan was to destroy and rebuild the entire universe. Drax and the guardians defeated Ego, saving the galaxy once more while Yondu Udonta sacrificed his life to help them.

Drax the Destroyer aided them in their escape, and set out on the quest to deliver the Orb of Morag to the Collector. While at Knowhere, he got into a scuffle with Rocket after a bit of gambling, forcing the other fugitives to intervene. He later sent a challenge for Ronan to confront him on Knowhere. In the resulting battle, Drax, Groot and Rocket were cut off from Quill and Gamora who had been captured by the Ravagers. Drax and the others launched a daring rescue with the Milano space ship facing off against the vastly superior power of the Ravager ship, which culminated in a fragile truce when Quill convinced the Ravagers to work with them.

Needing a champion to combat Thanos, the being known as Kronos took Arthur's spirit and placed it in a powerful new body, and Drax the Destroyer was born. Drax's powers included enhanced strength and resilience, flight, and the ability to project energy blasts from his hands. The character often battled Thanos, and on occasion the superheroes Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock. He was also a member of the group known as the Infinity Watch. In 2004, the character lost his flight and energy blasts, and a portion of his strength and resilience. This version of the character played a role in the crossover comic book events Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest, and became a member of the relaunched Guardians of the Galaxy. He has been featured in a variety of associated Marvel merchandise, including animated television series, toys, trading cards, and video games. Drax appears in the 2014 live-action film Guardians of the Galaxy, portrayed by Dave Bautista.
