He fought with Thorisin Gavras against the Sphrantzai, and remained loyal to the Empire even after Drax rebelled and claimed the westlands. His forces were part of the army sent by Thorisin to defeat Drax, but most of Utprand's soldiers (including Soteric, brother of Helvis) deserted him at the Battle of the Scamandros and he was killed in the fighting there. He was uncompromising and quick to anger, standing up for Namdalener religious beliefs even in the High Temple in Videssos the City.
