Not only did he enjoy a reputation for funny voices on radio — he had regular roles in World War II-era comedies Waterlogged Spa and Up the Pole that preceded The Navy Lark — but he generally played lighter roles on stage and screen. He was, for instance, "Lycus" in the 1963 London stage production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and "Crassus" in the 1966 film.
