Nolan brachte 1998 seinen ersten abendfüllenden Spielfilm auf die Leinwand. Bei dem Low-Budget-Film Following führte er nicht nur Regie, sondern schrieb auch das Drehbuch und produzierte ihn. Der Film brachte ihm erste Anerkennung und ermöglichte es ihm, sein nächstes Projekt in die Kinos zu bringen: Memento. Juli 2008 Premiere und spielte Rekordeinnahmen ein. Das Filmprojekt sorgte schon während der Dreharbeiten für Schlagzeilen, als ein Crewmitglied tödlich verunglückte. Kurze Zeit nach Abschluss der Dreharbeiten verstarb unerwartet der Darsteller des Joker, Heath Ledger. Für The Dark Knight gewann Nolan 2008 den Scream Award für das beste Drehbuch und die beste Regie. 2009 drehte er den Science-Fiction-Thriller Inception mit Leonardo DiCaprio in der Hauptrolle, der im Sommer 2010 in die Kinos kam.
