One of Nylund's personal heroes is Science Fiction writer Ray Bradbury. He was able to meet Bradbury at the San Diego Comic Con in 2007.

Nachdem Er 4 weitere Romane veröffentlicht und ein mittelmäßig erfolgreicher Autor geworden war, sah er ein, dass das Leben als freier Autor nicht so romantisch ist, wie es anfangs schien. Also bewarb er sich um einen Job bei Microsoft und arbeitete erst an Microsoft´s eigener Enzyklopädie und später bewarb er sich bei den noch jungen Microsoft Game Studios. Als Autor und Storyberater für die Microsoft Game Studios, wirkte Er bei der Entwicklung für Spiele wie Halo und Gears Of War mit. Zusätzlich zu seinen Halo Romanen arbeitete er noch mit am Graphic Novel Halo Wars: Genesis zusammen mit Phil Noto und Graeme Devine. Es erschien im Jahr 2009 in der Halo Wars Limited Edition. Heute lebt Nylund mit der Science-Fiction-Autorin Syne Mitchell in North Bend (Seattle).
