A branch of the family would rise to nobility with the marriage of Nicholas Potter to Elizabeth Irving, the 3rd Duchess of Inverness, their son Antonius Potter becoming the founder of the House of Potter. During the First and Second Wizarding Wars, the Potters supported the Order of the Phoenix and opposed Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. On the 31st October of 1981, James and Lily's encounter with Voldemort was their last. He murdered them as they attempted to protect their infant son Harry, who survived. While the main branch of the House of Potter would end with the death of James Potter, as his son was legally not part of the Potter family, instead being an Habsburg-Anemid, the Potter family would remain extant with the survival of Matthew Potter II, a distant cousin of James and Harry, and a descendant of Thaddeus Potter through his second and youngest son Alfred Potter I.
