To prevent the Organians from interfering, as they had done during the previous war, the Klingons developed a thought-shield which confined them to Organia. At the time the war began, the USS Enterprise was mapping a region of deep space near the Shapley Center, and was thus cut off from the Federation. Captain James T. Kirk decided to investigate Organia instead of rejoining the fleet, where they disabled the thought-shield and freed the Organians, who punished the Klingons by depriving them of space flight for a thousand years.
