  • A Shogun (将軍; lit. Force Commander) is the leader of the nine most powerful samurai countries (or districts). Similar to the rank of Kage among the shinobi, the Shogun are considered to be the most powerful samurai in their districts. Unlike the Kage rank, the Shogun rank is hereditary, passed from father/mother to son/daughter, although "usurpation" has been known to have occurred. Collectively, they are known as the Nine Shogun (九将軍; Kokoshogun). The passing of the title of Shogun typically occurs when a son or daughter challenges the parent holding the Shogun title, though instances where a non-family member has challenged the Shogun.

  • The Shogun was the ruler of Japan in the Middle Ages. (AUDIO: The Jade Pyramid)
  • Shogun (将軍 shōgun?) is a military rank and historical title in Japan. The rank is equivalent to "general," a high officer in an army. As a title, it is the short form of sei-i taishōgun (征夷大将軍). The Imperial Court in Kyoto awarded this title first to the leaders of military expeditions against warlike peoples, and later to the heads of military governments at many times in the history of Japan. A shogun's administration is a shogunate or bakufu (幕府). The latter literally means "tent government" in Japanese. The tent is symbolic of the role of the military in fighting wars in the field. The term sei-i taishōgun means "generalissimo who overcomes the barbarians." "Barbarian" is one of several ancient terms for various groups who had not yet become subject to the central government. Among them were the aboriginal Ainu people who once inhabited Honshu in addition to Hokkaido. Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate, seized considerable power from the aristocracy in Kyoto. He became the practical ruler of Japan, and received the title sei-i taishōgun. Thereafter, the heads of three successive shogunates received the same title. It continued in use until the Meiji Restoration.

  • A far eastern general who dictates tactics, but also takes a direct approach with its two swords. —In-Game Description, Etrian Odyssey III The Shogun is a support and offensive class introduced in Etrian Odyssey III: The Drowned City. They fight in deadly combat with two swords and issue commands to their allies. They are unlocked by siding with Armoroad. Shogun are very fast and have outstanding physical attack power. Their main weapon, the Katana, does strong damage. Due to the combination of low TEC and VIT, the sacrifice of a piece of armor for a second weapon, and the restriction to Clothing armor, defenses are practically non-existent, despite their average HP. TP is somewhat limited. Compared to the classes of other Etrian Odyssey games, the Shogun shares some similarities with the Ronin. They both wield katanas, abandon defenses in favor of speed and offense, and utilize stance-like mechanics. However, while the Ronin is solitary and self-sufficient, the Shogun relies on and supports allies. A wandering masterless samurai to an army commander samurai.

The passing of the title of Shogun typically occurs when a son or daughter challenges the parent holding the Shogun title, though instances where a non-family member has challenged the Shogun. The Shogun oversee their respective nations and are all considered to be equals in the eyes of the other Shoguns. Shoguns typically organize their countries and manage their land's political scenes. The Nine Shogun are: * Tetsushogun (鉄将軍; lit. Iron Force Commander) of the Land of Iron. * Fubukishogun (吹雪の中将軍; lit. Blizzard Force Commander) of the Land of Blizzards. * Kazanshogun (火山の将軍; lit. Volcano Force Commander) of the Land of Volcanoes. * Arashishogun (嵐の将軍; lit. Storm Force Commander) of the Land of Storms. * Moríshogun (森将軍; lit. Forest Force Commander) of the Land of Forests. * Kyōkokushogun (峡谷の将軍; lit. Canyon Force Commander) of the Land of Canyons. * Hankyōshogun (将軍エコー; lit. Echo Force Commander) of the Land of Echoes. * Tatsumakishogun (竜巻の将軍; lit. Tornado Force Commander) of the Land of Tornadoes. * Seishinshogun (精神将軍; lit. Spirit Force Commander) of the Land of Spirits. Although there are exceptions, as in the case of the samurai known as Ronin and the lesser, minor samurai nations, the bulk of samurai society was led by the Nine Shoguns.
  • Shogun largely features a continuation of the thrash metal style featured on The Crusade, however, it also marks the return of Matt Heafy's screaming vocals and is also the band's first album produced by Nick Raskulinecz. Band leader and frontman Matt Heafy was 22 years old when the album was written and recorded. Since its release, Shogun has sold over 300,000 copies worldwide. In the United States in its first week of release sold 24,000 copies and debut at number 23 on the Billboard 200 chart, and the top 100 in 18 other countries, including #6 on the Japanese international charts, #4 on the Canadian Hard Rock Charts, #1 on the UK rock charts and #4 on the Australian charts. As of March 2009, the album has sold around 70,000 copies in the United States since its late September release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. This album has a few songs that deal with ancient Japanese military customs and several regarding Greek mythology, some serving as metaphors to be interpreted by the listener. "Into the Mouth of Hell We March" and "Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis" detail the story of Odysseus choosing whether to face the giant whirlpool Charybdis or the 6-headed monster Scylla. "He Who Spawned the Furies" is about the Titan Cronus devouring his children and castrating his father Uranus, creating Aphrodite and the Erinýes (the Furies). "Of Prometheus and the Crucifix" references the daily torment of Prometheus and alludes to crucifixion of Jesus Christ, serving as a metaphor for enduring torment by the public for daring to contribute something new to society.
