According to a 2010 New York Times/CBS poll, the 18% of Americans who identify with the movement tended to be Republican, white, male, married and older than 45 years of age. New Report As such they are McCain voters and any claims they make to having been betrayed by Barack Obama that they voted for in 2008 were absurd. If some of the most visible leaders of the movement were obvious cranks, most who identified with it were rank and file Republicans who lost the last 2008 and 2012 elections and were unable to resist participating in a collective public temper tantrum. Tea Party ideology is a grab bag of inconsistent ideas expressing the collective ignorance, fear and selfishness of its adherents. Ron Rosenbaum points out the astonishing ignorance of history presented by tea-baggers. Liberalism os confused with communism and fascism. How can this be explained? Rosenbaum suggests the following: "[T]heir cult of personality is a kind of perverse cult of Obama. They've made a graven image of alien evil out of him. Obama: communist, Muslim, Kenyan, Manchurian candidate, fascist, socialist, capable of all varieties of political malevolence. A supervillain, with superpowers. Who requires super lies to combat." Alexei Bayer compared the Tea Party to the emergence of the communist movement from the democratic socialist parties in the early 20th century because of its opposition to all compromise and its formal anti-state rhetoric that is actually support for bureaucratic authoritarianism. By late 2013, some commentators were describing the movement's ideology as something akin to a European nationalism. According to Lynn Stuart Parramore, "The Tea Party is a fascinating case study for how these questions and ideas play out. Its members are bonded in anxiety and terror — a very powerful glue — over what America is becoming: something other than the “real America” they wish to belong to. Their America is white, Protestant and Anglo-Saxon (it’s no accident that the Right’s leading think tank is called the Heritage Foundation)."
