abstract
  • Environmental control stations were used by Starfleet as early as the mid-22nd century. Aboard an NX-class starship, the environmental controls console was on the port side bulkhead of the situation room, with a hand hold nearby on either side. (ENT: "Chosen Realm") While a religious faction of Triannons held the NX-class Enterprise and its crew hostage using organic explosives inside their own bodies in 2153, the ship's environmental controls console was covertly used by a Triannon named Yarrick, who had lost his faith in the religious teachings of his faction. His usage of the console was part of a plan Captain Archer devised in an ultimately successful attempt to retake the ship; the console was specifically used to reroute the craft's environmental controls in order to spread an especially synthesized gas that would neutralize the explosives. (ENT: "Chosen Realm") The term "environmental controls console" comes from the final draft script of "Chosen Realm". That script described the placement of the station only in as much as to say it was to be "to the rear of the Bridge." Aboard Galaxy-class vessels, the environmental station was located at the aft of the main bridge. Initially located in the far right position, the environment station replaced the Emergency Manual Override station in 2365. The new engineering station took over the former space it occupied. (TNG Season 2 – TNG Season 7; Star Trek Generations) William T. Riker used this station to clear the bridge's atmosphere from an excessive level of nitrogen oxide in 2366. (TNG: "Evolution" ) Starfleet officer Jae frequently manned the environment station. (TNG: "Reunion" , etc.)
