En Mario Kart Wii, Los autos y personajes se dividen en su peso, estos son: Pesado, Mediano y Ligero. Los Pesados se caracterizan, por tener una gran velocidad, pero por su peso una mala aceleración, los Medianos tienen las características balanceadas y los Ligeros tienen poca Velocidad pero por su poco peso una gran Aceleración. Al igual que Mario Kart DS, en Mario Kart Wii hay pistas Retro trayendo Circuitos de anteriores Juegos de la Saga Mario Kart; también Incluye Conexión Wi-Fi para que puedan jugar hasta 12 jugadores en una sola carrera, y 4 jugadores Online. Das Spiel lässt sich unter anderem mit dem mitgelieferten Wii Wheel steuern, man kann aber auch die klassische Variante via Nunchuck und Wii-Fernbedienung oder aber auch via Classic Controller oder Gamecube Controller benutzen.
