It was comprised of two principal components: Marine Close Reconnaissance Groups and Marine Deep Reconnaissance Groups, both of which were disparate and had separate responsibilities.
* Close Reconnaissance Groups, known as Systems Alliance Marine Division Reconnaissance, conducted reconnaissance in the close battlespace and typically collected operationally-pertinent intelligence to support Division operations in the immediate future. Two Division Reconnaissance Battalions were attached to each Marine Division.
* Deep Reconnaissance Groups, known as Systems Alliance Marine Force Reconnaissance, conducted reconnaissance in the deep battlespace to provide strategic intelligence, and were also capable of fulfilling other special operations responsibilities, such as direct action, counterterrorism, and combat search and rescue. One Force Reconnaissance Company was attached to each Marine Division.
