If they have a green Force Gem at the top of the arch, they can be activated by hitting the Force Gem with a cannonball. If there is no Force Gem at the top of the arch, then their corresponding archway needs to be activated before it can be used, or their corresponding archway is in a realm that is currently inaccessable to Link, so the pair cannot be used. If the Force Gem and the archway's symbols appear yellow, then the portal is active. To use a portal, Link must blow the Spirit Train's whistle while near one. Doing so causes a yellow portal to appear, which will transport Link to the corresponding gate when he travels through it. A total of eight pairs of gates can be unlocked, with typically four per realm. There is also a special gate in the Forest Realm that leads to the Dark Realm. According to Ferrus, these gates can be used to break the space-time continuum.
