Simmons' debut came in 1979, when he competed at Atlanta for Childers Racing. It was a great race for the driver, starting 26th and completing all but thirteen laps in route to a 14th place finish. That earned him a ride in the season finale at Ontario, though this time around transmission woes left him 29th.

Simmons' final six races, all in 1980 and all for Childers, left him a career-best 43rd in points. However, Simmons failed to find any consistency for the year. Four DNFs in his first four races hurt any momentum the driver had, finishing no better than 22nd at Rockingham during the stretch. But he did close out his career well, finishing 16th at Martinsville and 24th at Talladega in his final series race.
