Hathaway es un Newtype y un talentoso piloto de MS. Además de atlético es también una persona muy persuasiva con grandes cualidades de liderazgo. Apareció por primera vez en Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, y reaparece en la película de Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack y es el protagonista de la novela Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway Flash. Hathaway es una persona romántica, delirante, enojado y vengativo. Crecer en tiempos de agitación y al no tener una vida estable. Hathaway vivió una vida equivocada, sobre todo con un soldado de carrera como padre, (Bright Noa). Después de enamorarse de Quess Paraya, él hizo todo lo posible para ayudarla. A pesar de que ella hizo obvio que se sentía atraída por Amuro Ray, Hathaway siempre creía que tenía sentimientos por él también. Cuando Char tomó Quess, estaba tan obsesionado de ella que él estaba dispuesto a romper cualquier regla e incluso matar a la gente que se puso en su camino para estar con Quess. Cuando Chan Agi mató accidentalmente Quess durante una batalla, se sintió abrumado por la ira y el resentimiento contra la Federación Terrestre y los adultos. He quickly becomes attached to Quess and obsessed with rescuing her from Char when she turned against Amuro and her father. At the fight near the Axis Asteroid, Hathaway tries to reason with Quess when in the confusion Chan fires a critical shot at them. Quess pushes her friend out of the way and dies in the explosion. Enraged, Hathaway shoots and kills Chan. In the movie, Hathaway is last seen surviving but in shock by his actions. During the novel adaption of Char's Counterattack, he accidentally kills Quess with a stray shot as he tried to hunt down Char. He would later become the leader of his own terrorist group in a self-titled novel series. For this continuity, he is hailed as one of the strongest Newtypes to grace the age.
