After the United States Army plunged deep into Confederate territory, Blackledge and his men found themselves in a constant retreat, with Blackledge finding himself in command of his company as commanding officers were killed or went missing. The company moved from Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina. By mid 1944, Blackledge and his men found themselves in Appomattox, Virginia, after they'd been surrounded and scattered by U.S troops, who gave the holdout Confederates the choice of surrender or death. Blackledge chose surrender for himself. Jorge Rodriguez followed his example.
