Much like their Bow counterparts, ballistae are capable of inflicting effective damage against Flying Units like Pegasus Knights and Wyvern Riders and cannot be countered. In Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, ballistae are solely operated by a special Ballistician class.
  • Before you can use a ballista in a Castle Wars match, you must purchase all four ballista parts and at least one piece of ammo for it. If you lack ammo, it'll display the message: "You don't have any ballista ammo, so there's no point in setting up the weapon.". After the ballista is destroyed, the parts (including all left over ammo) are dropped on the left side of the setup station for the owner to pick up. You will get a warning 2–3 minutes in advance if it is going to collapse out of time. Therefore, once the ballista parts are dropped, the player may use it again in exactly 1 minute's time. Then they may be set up and used again. This is an effective way to get the most kills as it usually hits a minimum of 100 life points. It can also be rotated at right angles.

  • The Ballista is an Exceptional crossbow found in Diablo II.
  • Ballistae (ロングアーチ Rongu āchi, lit. Long Arches in the Japanese versions) are special long-ranged artillery weaponry that recurrently appear across the Fire Emblem Series. Deployed across many a battlefield by units of the Archer class line, these weapons are capable of firing ammunition over great distances, dramatically expanding the range of the normal Archer, Sniper or Marksman. Much like their Bow counterparts, ballistae are capable of inflicting effective damage against Flying Units like Pegasus Knights and Wyvern Riders and cannot be countered. In Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, ballistae are solely operated by a special Ballistician class. In Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, ballistae are a weapon, not a tile, employed exclusively by the Ballistician class. There are five types of ballistae in these games: * Thunderbolt, a ballista that inflicts bonus damage to enemy ballisticians. * Stonehoist, a standard but inaccurate ballista. * Hoistflamme, a more accurate, but slightly less durable and weaker ballista as compared to the Stonehoist. * Arrowspate, a ballista that inflicts bonus damage to flying units. * Pachyderm, a ballista that inflicts the highest damage against a regular target. It has more accuracy than a Stonehoist, but has low durability. In Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, ballistae are a terrain type that grants 5 avoid. Like forests and other spaces that provide cover, passing through them costs extra movement, and ballista spaces require 2 movement spaces to traverse. The interesting thing is that this applies to flying units as well, making the ballista space the only terrain in the game that affects the movement of fliers. In Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, Chapter 23 (Linus' version) features a ballista next to Linus himself with an exceptionally long attack range of 15 tiles, sufficient to target a unit visiting the red-roofed house on the southeastern corner of the map. In the games Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and others, there are three variations of the Ballista. There are the generic bronze ones, which have normal power, similar like the ones from past Fire Emblem games. The Iron Ballista are slightly stronger in power and the Killer Ballista comes with an upped critical percentage, increasing the chance of taking out enemy units with one strike. In Radiant Dawn, ballistae do not have weapon effectiveness against Dracoknights.

The ballista can only attack the opposing team. It has 10,000 life points, weak to crush and can only be destroyed by the opposing team as well. If the ballista is destroyed by the opposing team, simply run back to the stand where you had placed it. The parts and ammo will be nearby. If you leave the game or if the game ends while your ballista is still on the stand, it will appear in your inventory. All parts, except the bolts, can be resold for the same amount of silver tickets it took to get it. If you resell it, you will only lose 4 silver tickets from the cost of the bolts, which cannot be sold.

A smaller version, called the Scorpion was invented by Archimedes of Syracuse in the 3rd Century BC during the Punic Wars. The Romans later adapted the ballista and used it for both sieges and massive field battles. After the Fall of Rome, the ballista disappeared from the West, yet the Byzantines used it extensively in their battles. This was brought back to Western Europe during the Crusades, although it was mainly used for besieging castles by that time. The arrival of gunpowder deemed the Ballista as outdated and impractical for siege warfare by the 15th Century.
