The Mercato was first established in Roman times, as the city of the Forum, and it was only in 1030 that the landmark was first documented as a marketplace. Staple foods from the countryside, like grain, were the most popular goods sold, followed by wool.

Der Mercato geht auf das bereits aus der Römerzeit stammende Forum zurück, fand aber erst nach 1030 erstmalig als Marktplatz Erwähnung. Grundnahrungsmittel aus dem Umland, wie Getreide, waren die beliebtesten Güter, dicht gefolgt von Wolle. Wurde den Einkäufern das Grundsätzliche jedoch zu langweilig, so... Zitieren wir den Dichter Il Panormita aus dem 15. Jahrhundert: "Dort, den halben Weg die Straße hinunter, steht ein fröhliches Bordell, welches Ihr an seinem ganz eigenen Geruche erkennen werdet."
