Formerly a co-owner of Caedmon Candles and Cynewulf Hartwood Furniture, he worked for the IBM as a computer specialist for three years before managing computer security at General Foods of Canada. He also did improvisational comedy on the side, easing his transition into the voice acting industry. In 1983, Stone moved to Los Angeles in order to become a full-time voice actor. There, he started his own company called Doug Stone Enterprises which supplies clients with voiceover work. Gully Jimson, David Bainbridge, and David Orosco are among some of the pseudonyms he has used.
