Starting positions in the field of twenty-five are unknown, but Smith struggled in the race and finished a disappointing 23rd. Things were even worse for Smith in a later start during the year, finishing 55th in the inaugural Southern 500 at Darlington. Smith's final race came in 1951, when he competed at his home track of Lakeview Speedway in Mobile. Smith garnered a solid 5th place effort in qualifying and, despite a less-than-stellar race, Smith wound up finishing a career-best 16th.
