It is bordered on the north by the North Sea, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea; on the east by Poland and the Czech Republic; on the south by Austria and Switzerland; and on the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Its capital is Berlin. Germany is a parliamentary federal republic of sixteen states (Bundesländer). The capital city and seat of government is Berlin. As a nation-state, the country was unified amidst the Franco-Prussian War in 1871 by Otto von Bismark. After its defeat in World War II Germany was divided into two sections, East Germany and West Germany. East Germany was a socialist controlled by the Soviet Union, and called the Deutsche Demokratische Republik, or the DDR. The West was a Republic controlled by the Western allies of the Second World war and also known as the Federal Republic. During the collapse of the Soviet Union, East Germany dissolved into the West by 1990, reunifying the country.
