  • The Horse Archer is the first Ranged Cavalry unit. It becomes available in the Classical Age. Like all Ranged Cavalry, Horse Archers are fast raiders able to fire even while moving. They are effective when fighting Heavy Infantry, Artillery Weapons, Civilians and Support Units. Horse Archers are countered with Light Cavalry and Foot Archers. Like all cavalry, the Horse Archer can garrison inside a Fort/Castle/Fortress/Redoubt, but not inside a City or Tower.

  • Although fairly weak, having almost no armour, and being incapable of dishing out a great deal of damage, the Horse Archer's appeal lies in the fact that it is the fastest missile cavalry unit in the Dark Ages: aside from traditional light horse units and archers, there is no way to take them out. Additionally, Horse Archers have the best range and rate of fire for any Dark Age ranged cavalry, excluding a variety of unique units, and so if used properly can be fairly lethal in sufficient numbers. Accompany horse archers with other units, such as heavy cavalry, as horse archers have one enemy, and that is other ranged units: foot archers are particularly lethal because they outrange Horse Archers. Otherwise, Horse Archers can be very flexible — unlike Javelin Cavalry they can be used in frontal assaults, or be sent to ambush an enemy's rear or flanks. Cavalry archery traditions in antiquity were often associated with cultures in Central Asia, where various nomadic tribes made their living off the practice of animal herding and horses ever since the prehistoric period. The land lends itself to breed a people who were used to harsh living conditions and mobility. It was thus unsurprising that the various Turkic and Mongol-Tungusic tribes (among the most notable of these being the Magyar and the Mongols) inhabiting these steppes were often the bane of each other as well as more "civilised" sedentary cultures, such as those of Rome and Persia to the west and China in the far east. However, such contact between empire and barbarians wasn't always that acrimonious — many a king and prince in the Middle Ages managed to appreciate the skills of the Turks in horse archery enough to purchase their services and even assimilate them into mainstream society. Horses weren't the only animals used as cavalry platforms for archers — camels were also used in Central Asia wherever the climate was too harsh for the use of horses.

  • The Horse Archer is a fast ranged cavalry that can be made during the Iron Age in the Archery Range. Horse Archers are one the more expensive archery units, but their decent attack, good range and most importantly its high speed makes them one of the best units of the Iron Age. Although a horse archer has only a tenth as many hit points as an Elephant Archer, it has much greater speed. Having this key ability allows them to outmaneuver most units under open terrain. Under ideal conditions in one on one combat, horse archers dominate the field. As a result, this makes them a great choice in guerilla warfare. However, due to its fragility, their attacking potential becomes less powerful the more they are bunched together on the battlefield where they can be prime targets for siege weaponry that does area of effect damage. The Horse Archer can be upgraded to a more powerful Heavy Horse Archer once Iron Age is reached.

Often specialize in Hit and Run Tactics, especially with archers who can spur their horse, turn around and shoot backwards as their enemies pursue. Naturally, since it requires expert horsemanship, a specialty of any Born in the Saddle culture. An honorable mention goes to earlier civilizations (Persians, Egyptians, etc.) that used chariots as a shooting platform, but in those cases it was a team of both horses and men. Even in the era of the gun, firearms were almost impossible to use effectively from horseback, as a muzzle-loaded weapon requires stability, dexterity, and two hands to reload. This meant that bow-wielding horsemen held on to an advantage up until the invention of the revolver. The Myth Busters also proved that charging towards your target on a horse while firing can impart your arrows with ~70% more kinetic energy, and increase their penetration power a bit. In Tabletop Games and Video Games, these are often Game Breaker units, but not always. For balance reasons, they are often less powerful than archers who go on foot, and if Annoying Arrows are in place already, this can lead to them being unable to effectively damage the enemy. Given that they often trade armor for speed, they can also easily be portrayed as Fragile Speedsters. If they can attack with swords as well, it's a case of Bow and Sword In Accord. Examples of Horse Archer include:
