  • The Action Replay is a cheat device for Pokémon games and other Nintendo DS games. It can be used on Visual File:Action Replay DS.jpg Boy Advance as well, by adding the cheats to the Gameshark code list. Action Replay devices can also be used for the Nintendo Gamecube. The Action Replay Powersaves device can be used to modify game saves for 3DS games, and works well with Pokémon X & Y. The Action Replay requires a master code for every game. Unless a user knows how to properly use the device, experimenting with the codes is not recommended. In rare cases, using the device without proper care or knowledge could possibly create glitches in your game and/or completely delete save data.

Currently, Action Replay is available for a number of consoles including the Nintendo 64 and Nintendo GameCube which feature games in the Super Smash Bros. series; a version for the Wii has been released as well.

  • Action Replay has its roots in the Commodore 64 home computer. In its trademark red cartridge, the Action Replay was one of the most popular turbo cartridges; that is, cartridges that allowed faster disk and tape operations, allowing for example most of the disk operations to run 10 times faster. Another key point was it that it was also a freezer cartridge, which meant it could stop the current program, save memory contents on tape or disk, and when this file was loaded again (on a C64 which need not have the cartridge installed), the program would continue from exactly the same point. This allowed single-load games to be backed up and copied. The cartridge also included a lot of other utilities, like floppy disk file management and disk copying features.
  • An Action Replay is a device used to hack into the Nintendo DS or Nintendo DSi system to modify game data. In the case of Wild World, a common use was to make every item available in the catalog and cause the player to have maximum Bells. Action Replays also can create items (such as seeds), it is also used for the Villager Modifier. Depending on the usage, the game's code may start to display glitches.

This is because the game can't keep track of what happened for a long time. The games memorize about 3 minutes of playthrough. When the race takes over 3 minutes, the data from the earliest parts of the track are deleted to give room to the recent actions. When the player chooses to play the track forward in time, everything is redone like it happened. The player can choose to replay the track in fast forward or normal speed; and the same things backwards. In the latter case, the sounds will also be inverted. When at fast speeds, the sounds will play fast and with high pitch. The camera is also customizable, as the player can choose from a variety of angles and modes to view the action in the best way possible. Some of the camera modes are exclusive to the Action Replay, and are very interesting.

Since then, there have been many revisions of the theme for various systems, but they have all, with some exceptions, retained the same feature found in C64 version, that is, the ability to examine memory locations and — more importantly modify them. The exception to this rule are the Xbox and PlayStation Portable Action Replay devices, which are save game transfer devices, as well as the Action Replay Max Duo for the Gameboy Advance and Nintendo DS (cheats work for Gameboy Advance games, yet only saves are used with Nintendo DS games).

Due to Nintendo's improved device security, the creators of the Action Replay had to release a new model for the Nintendo DSi system, Action Replay DSi, allowing owners of this device to continue hacking.

Currently, the Action Replay is available on the Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DSi, and Wii. At the beginning of the company's history, Action Replay created their cartridges on the non-Nintendo console Commodore 64 home console, and allowed the disk operations to go up to 10 times faster than normally. Another key point in the cartridge was that it was able to save your game no matter where you are. And once you booted it back up, you would start in the exact location as before. Today Action Replay still uses this method in many of their new Action Replay products.
