Synopsis
  • Officer Franklin Falls Down returns to the reservation just in time to investigate the killing of a local dancer named Margarette Spear. Already on scene is FBI Agent Newsome, the partner of Special Agent Baylis Earl Nitz, who is running the undercover operation utilizing Dashiel Bad Horse. Falls Down requests the 1975 files of the shooting of two FBI agents. He seems to think there's a connection between those shootings and Gina Bad Horse's murder, an investigation he is spearheading.
  • At a prison in Kansas City, Lawrence Belcourt, the man imprisoned for shooting the two aforementioned FBI agents in 1975, wanders the prison yard and speaks to another prisoner. He tells this prisoner that he knows Chief Lincoln Red Crow pays the man to look after Belcourt while he is in prison. He tells the prisoner to relay a message to Red Crow. That message is that Belcourt needs to speak to Red Crow because he knows who killed Gina Bad Horse.
  • Officer Falls Down returns home to find that Agent Newsome has left him the files he requested. Falls Down sits down with a cup of coffee and the file on the shooting and begins going over them. The files cite who was present that day and that shooting occurred, but state it is unkown who fired the fatal shots at the FBI agents that day. Lawrence Belcourt was sentenced for the crime after witnesses, who later recanted their testimony, said he bragged about the shooting. Through a visual representation of the killer's memory, we see what actually happened that day, including the person who did the shooting: Arthur J. Pendergrass a.k.a. Catcher. Present day Pendergrass stands at Gina Bad Horse's grave and apologizes for killing her and for allowing Belcourt to go to prison for killing the FBI agents in his place. He promises to do everything in his power to set her son, Dashiel Bad Horse, on the right path to salvation.
Notes
  • Arthur J. Pendergrass reveals in this issue he had romantic feelings for Gina Bad Horse.
quotation
  • I never shoulda shot them two agents. Never shoulda let Lawrence take the fall for it. Maybe if I hadn't done all that, I never woulda lost you. I'm sorry you had to die for me to see that.
