| abstract | - Menegroth, also known as the Thousand Caves and The Caves of Menegroth, was the capital city of the land of Doriath, which was home to King Thingol and Queen Melian of the Sindarin people during the First Age of the Sun. Within it was the beautifully decorated Hall of Thingol where sat his throne and where he dispensed his judgments. It was there that Thingol was slain by the Dwarven craftsmen of Nogrod. The quest of Beren to gain a Silmaril begins at Menegroth. It is also here that Lúthien the fair was born. It was later sacked by the Sons of Fëanor in pursuit of one of the Silmarils taken from Morgoth's Iron Crown prior to the War of Wrath.

Fu la più grande e bella reggia sotterranea mai costruita dagli Elfi e da essa prese ispirazione Re Finrod Felagund, nipote di Thingol, per la costruzione della sua reggia del Nargothrond. Dopo la morte di Thingol, Menegroth divenne la residenza di suo nipote Dior e della sua famiglia ma venne abbandonata dopo il Secondo Fratricidio, quando i Figli di Fëanor l'attaccarono per impadronirsi del Silmaril rubato a Morgoth da Beren e Luthien. Dopo la Guerra d'Ira la reggia, assieme a buona parte del Beleriand, sprofondò nel mare andando perduta per sempre.

Wewnątrz miasta filary wyrzeźbiono na kształt buków Oromego zdobione w ornamenty roślinne i zwierzęce, liczne srebrne fontanny, złote latarnie, marmurowe misy. W mieście podobno żyły nawet słowiki i inne ptaki. Meliana wieszała na ścianach tkaniny własnej roboty przedstawiające obrazy z Valinoru a także przepowiednie przyszłości. Było to jedno z najwspanialszych miast w dziejach Ardy.

Das Königreich Doriath und so auch die Stadt Menegroth wurden durch einen Schutzgürtel, auch Gürtel Melians genannt, vor Feinden geschützt. Die Stadt war geprägt von vielen Grotten und Höhlen. Wie ein Geflecht war alles durch unzählige Gänge miteinander verbunden. Ein wahres Meisterstück hatten die Zwerge und Elben aus Belegost mit dieser Stadt geschaffen, und bekamen königlichen Lohn dafür. Die Perle Nimphelos (Sindarin: Weißer Schnee), die größte und schönste Perle, die man je fand, wurde den Zwergen als Lohn für ihre Arbeit gegeben. In Menegroth gab es beleuchtete Säulen, die wie Buchen aussahen. Steinfiguren von Tieren waren aufgestellt und die Fußböden mit farbigen Fliesen ausgelegt. Es gab silberne Brunnen und Marmorbecken. Wertvolle Wandbehänge und Teppiche, die von den Taten der Valar und ihrer Geschichte berichteten, schmückten die Wände. Nachdem nun König Thingol im Streit von den Zwergen erschlagen worden war, es ging dabei um das Nauglamír, verließ Melian Doriath und hob den Schutzgürtel um Stadt und Land auf. Doriath lag nun ungeschützt da und wurde in zahlreichen Kämpfen völlig zerstört.
