  • This is a symbol of the United States. It symbolizes the government of the U.S. His origin started in the war of 1812. No one knows for sure how "Uncle Sam" was created or who it was named after. But, one theory says that he was named after a butcher named Samuel Wilson. His origin started in the war of 1812. When Samuel was shipping large boxes of meat to the U.S army, one of the soldiers saw the U.S stamped on the boxes. He jokily suggested that the initials stood for "Uncle Sam" Wilson. But the appearance of Uncle Sam was different from Samuel Wilson. Uncle Sam wore star-spangled suit with a star hat. The big difference is that Uncle Sam had a goatee on and Samuel was clean shaven.

  • Uncle Sam (initials U.S.) same as the United States is a common national personification of the United States government that, according to legend, came into use during the War of 1812 and was supposedly named for Samuel Wilson. The first use of Uncle Sam in literature was in the 1816 allegorical book "The Adventures of Uncle Sam in Search After His Lost Honor" by Frederick Augustus Fidfaddy, Esq. An Uncle Sam is mentioned as early as 1775, in the original "Yankee Doodle" lyrics of the Revolutionary War. It is not clear whether this reference is to Uncle Sam as a metaphor for the United States, or to an actual person named Sam. The lyrics as a whole clearly deride the military efforts of the young nation, besieging the British at Boston. The 13th stanza is:
  • Uncle Sam is the fictional embodiment of the United States of America, heavily used in political cartoons, propaganda, and other anthropomorphic depictions of the country. The term "Uncle Sam" dates to the War of 1812, and the earliest depiction to 1852. It was primarily in the post-Civil War era, however, particularly in the illustrations of Thomas Nast, that the familiar image of the tall, goateed Uncle Sam (borrowing aspects of Abraham Lincoln) completely supplanted earlier anthropomorphizations of America (such as Columbia and Brother Jonathan).
  • After comparing the Ferengi to the "Yankee traders", Data doubted that the Ferengi wore red, white, and blue, or looked anything like Uncle Sam. (TNG: "The Last Outpost" ) While running the Dixon Hill holoprogram in 2364, Jean-Luc Picard, Data, and Whalen passed an advertising poster of "Uncle Sam" near a newsstand. The poster reads "I Want You For U.S. Army". (TNG: "The Big Goodbye" ) During the late 1990s, an establishment called Uncle Sam's Psychic Readings operated in Los Angeles. It advertised by sending out a man on stilts, dressed as Uncle Sam. (VOY: "Future's End")

Uncle Sam became particularly iconic in World War I, through a series of famous recruitment posters in which, finger outstretched, he encouraged citizens to join the military.

As Sam's family and friends (which includes his mentor, former sergeant Jed Crowley, who regrets filling Sam's head with stories of the glories of war) pay their reluctant respects to the dead man, the town prepares for its Fourth of July celebration, which local (and extremely corrupt) congressman Alvin Cummings will be attending, in an attempt to salvage his public image. Unfortunately for Twin Rivers, Sam comes out of hibernation when the clock strikes midnight on July 3rd, kills a perverted Uncle Sam for his costume, and sets about murdering all those he views as unpatriotic, including (but not limited to) flag burners, draft dodgers, tax evaders, stoners and slimy politicians. When Sam ultimately crashes the town's Fourth of July celebration, Jody (who had become disillusioned after learning about Sam's history) and Jed, with help from a crippled boy named Barry Cronin (who has an inexplicable connection to Sam) must work together to send the psycho soldier back to Hell.
