In the midst of his 18th year leading one on of the nation's most successful and comprehensive athletic programs, Curley is among five finalists for the honor. Joining Curley as finalists are: Bob Bowlsby (Stanford), Chris Del Conte (TCU), DeLoss Dodds (Texas) and Chris Hill (Utah). The winner will be announced May 18 at the Sports Business Awards at the New York Marriott Marquis. Curley is a two-time recipient of NACDA's Northeast Region AD of the Year for the Football Bowl Subdivision. The 2005-06 NACDA President, Curley previously won the NACDA regional AD honor in 2003 and `09. Among some of the other categories that will be recognized at the Sports Business Awards are: Professional Sports Team and Sports League of the Year, Sports Event and Sports Executive of the Year, Sports Facility of the Year and Best in Sports Media and Best in Sports Television. Sports Business Journal and Daily sponsor the Sports Business Awards. Named Director of Athletics on December 30, 1993, Curley's dynamic and passionate leadership has been the driving force behind the Nittany Lions' tremendous level of athletic and academic achievement. During the Nittany Lions' 18 years as members of the Big Ten Conference, Penn State has captured 21 NCAA Championships, more than double the next closest Big Ten school (Iowa and Minnesota with nine). Since March 2007, Penn State has won 10 NCAA Championships, from five different sports, the highest total of any institution in the nation. Curley has seen Nittany Lion squads win 63 Big Ten titles and numerous individual national and conference crowns during his 17-plus years directing Penn State's comprehensive and nationally-respected athletic program. Penn State has won 27 Big Ten Championships since the fall of 2005, the conference's second-highest total. During the 2010-11 academic year, 16 Penn State fall and winter sports programs have qualified for their respective NCAA Championships, with women's volleyball winning an unprecedented fourth consecutive national title and wrestling winning its first NCAA crown since 1953. This weekend in Rec Hall, the Penn State men's volleyball team will seek its third NCAA Championship under Curley's leadership. The second-seeded Nittany Lions face Ohio State in the NCAA semifinals Thursday at 9:00 p.m. Penn State was No. 3 in the 2010-11 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup final winter standings, earning its sixth consecutive Top 5 finish through the winter sports season. The Nittany Lions have placed in the Directors' Cup Top 25 every year since its inception in 1993-94, with eight Top 10 finishes and four Top five finishes. In October 2010, the NCAA reported that Penn State student-athletes earned a school record 90 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR), 11 points higher than the national Division I average. Penn State's 90 percent GSR was second-highest to Northwestern among Big Ten Conference institutions. Twenty-three of Penn State's 25 teams earned a GSR at or above the national average of 79 percent or higher (track and field and cross country count as one sport).
