He is the head football coach at the United States Military Academy, a position he has held since the 2009 season. Ellerson served as the head football at Southern Utah University in 1996 and at California Polytechnic State University from 2001 to 2008. While at Cal Poly, Ellerson's teams won three conference championships and compiled a 56–34 record, giving him the third highest winning percentage of any football coach in school history.
