Sir Thursday continues from the preceding book, following the adventures of Arthur Penhaligon as he attempts to retrieve the Fourth key of the Kingdom, and claim mastership of The Great Maze. As with the other books in the series, the theme of 'seven' is prevalent, along with the themes of sin and virtue. The book received generally favourable critical response, but was criticised for a slow pace, among other issues.
- One of the main antagonists in this story is Sir Thursday, one of the seven Days against whom Arthur must face off. They were seven of the Architect's favourite Denizens and were placed in charge of the The House (in absentia). They were each given one of seven Keys, and the House split into seven Domains, each Day ruling one of these Domains - having absolute power in their Deminse. They were also forbidden to enter the Universes outside of the House (the 'Original Law') but they and their monions are capable of going to any place in existence on the day with their namesake (i.e. 'Mister Monday' can go to Earth on a Monday). Unfortunately, though originally pure of heart, absolute power corrupted them, in different ways, absolutely. In the case of Sir Thursday, he has the sin of 'Wrath' -

He is a very powerful, cruel, volatile, destructive, temperamental, quarrelsome, impatient, and excessively violent Denizen. He is afflicted with Anger/Wrath, one of the seven deadly sins. His obedience is to Superior Saturday and Lord Sunday, whose orders he is obeying when he retains the Will against its demands. Arthur distracted him by exciting his anger, thereby releasing the Fourth Part of the Will, and claimed the Fourth Key, which chose to take the form of a baton or a rapier when in his grasp, as opposed to the broadsword wielded by Sir Thursday.
