(TOS: "The Cloud Minders")

  • Ardana was an inhabited planet orbiting the primary Ardana, in the Beta Quadrant. This was the homeworld for the Ardanans, a warp-capable species. The planet was a Federation member. It was in the same quadrant as Merak II. Ardana was the only known planet that mined zenite. Prior to stardate 5818, this planet was united under an uniglobal government. The capital city of this world was the elevated metropolis Stratos. The civilization of Ardana was divided into two castes, a labor class of Troglytes and an intellectual ruling class of Stratos city-dwellers. The caste system was riven with conflict. This world was admitted to the Federation. Upon being admitted as a member, it was expected that Ardana would live up to its obligations in helping another member. Despite its membership in the Federation, Ardana employed torture and capital punishment. In 2269, Ardana's obligations as a member were threatened by a rebellion. In that year, the USS Enterprise came to obtain zenite for use to prevent a bacterial botanical plague on Merak II. Captain James T. Kirk of the Enterprise successfully quelled a rebellion by the Troglytes against the city-dwellers on the planet, while at the same time procuring a consignment of zenite for transport to Merak II. (TOS: "The Cloud Minders" ; DIS: "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad")

Other major cities on the planet's surface were First City, Lejico, and Droxana. (CoE eBook: Signs from Heaven) Ardana was admitted into the United Federation of Planets in 2263. (ST reference: Star Charts) Ardana was, as of 2269, the only source of zenite in the Federation. The USS Enterprise visited Ardana in that year to collect a consignment of zenite to cure a botanical plague on Merak II. (TOS episode: "The Cloud Minders") In 2377, Stratos's anti-gravity engines began to fail, threatening First City as well as the entire surface. A team from the Starfleet Corps of Engineers attempted to repair the engines, then failing that, to land the city safely. This effort failed when factions opposed to the city's preservation fired explosive armaments at the descending city, destroying it. (CoE eBook: Signs from Heaven) In 2381, Ardana was one of the worlds targeted as part of a massive Borg invasion. The planet was saved through the sacrifice of the IRW Verithrax, a vessel in the fleet of the Imperial Romulan State. (Star Trek: Destiny novel: Lost Souls) See also: Ardanan.

  • Full name Class Nationality First appearanceBy the Sword (novel) The mercenary Ardana Flinteyes was a low ranking officer in the mercenary company the Skybolts under Captain Lerryn. During the debacle in Menmellith, when the joint companies were ambushed by "bandits" and their reinforcements out of Karse, the Skybolts lost nearly all their officers in the subsequent flight. Ardana was the highest ranking survivor, which granted her the right to the Captaincy. Unfortunately, Ardana had none of the skills of a leader or strategist, and she wasn't wise enough to listen to the gifted individuals under her command. She lead the remaining company from one disaster to another until finally Kerowyn had had enough. She severed her contract with the company and left. Ardana calling for her arrest was only the latest in a long line of bad and therefore unpopular decisions. Using a mostly ignored provision in the Mercenary Code, the company removed her as Captain and voted Kerowyn in. Ardana was described as having eyes hard as flint, probably the origin of her surname. While she had never been the best officer, the pressure of the Captaincy turned her into a monster. She put Kerowyn in mind of "a half-mad, half-starved dog." (By the Sword)
